Alabama

PT requirements:

10 PT contact hours every year with a renewal date of September 30.

Occupational Therapist: 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) annually or 3.0 CEUs (or 30 contact hours) biennially. No more than 1/3 of continuing education credits can be related to administration/management/academic related with the rest of the hours related to direct patient treatment.

Occupational Therapy Assistant: 1.0 CEUs (10 contact hours) annually or 2.0 CEUs (or 20 contact hours) biennially. No more than 1/3 of continuing education credits can be related to administration/management/academic related with the rest of the hours related to direct patient treatment.

Arkansas

California

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours (3 CEUs) every two years with a renewal date that falls on the last day of the licensee’s birth month, beginning two years post-issuance.

Colorado

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours (30 points) every two years with a renewal date of October 31 (in even-numbered years).

OT requirements:

OTs and OTAs must participate in the Continuing Professional Development Program (CPD). For each renewal period, the CPD Program consists of the following elements: Completion of a Reflective Self-Assessment Tool (RSAT) and establishment of learning goals; Execution of a Learning Plan; Accrual of 24 hours of Professional Development Activities (PDA), no more than 12 hours will be credited in one category of PDA; AND Documentation and retention of Professional Development Activities (PDA).

Connecticut

Occupational Therapists (OT) are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education in the 2 year period preceding the date the license expires. Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are required to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education in the 2 year period preceding the date the license expires. Licenses for both Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants expire on September 30 on odd-numbered years. Renewals begin July 1 of odd-numbered years.

Florida

PT requirements:

OT requirements:

Initial Licensure for Occupational Therapists (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA): Two (2) hour course relating to prevention of medical errors and one (1) hour course in HIV/ AIDS. Renewal Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants: 26 CE hours; 2 hours of Florida OT Laws & Rules and 2 hours of Prevention of Medical Errors every 2 years. Must be completed by February 28th, 2017. At least fourteen (14) of the required hours per biennium must be in person or from interactive, real-time courses.

Georgia

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of December 31 (in odd-numbered years).

OT requirements:

All Occupational Therapy (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) licenses expire on March 31st of all even years. You are responsible for renewing your license during the renewal period. The Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy requires each licensed OT and OTA to complete continuing education. A minimum 24 contact clock hours of continuing education is required for every renewal. 14 of the hours must relate to direct “hands on” patient care. Up to 12 hours may be obtained using on-line or home-study courses. The remaining hours can be in any contact area related to occupational therapy practice including but not limited to supervision, education, documentation, quality assurance, and administration. The Georgia State Board of Occupational Therapy requires each licensed OT and OTA to complete up to 2 hours in ethics, every two years or per each renewal period.

Hawaii

Illinois

PT requirements:

40 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of September 30 (in even-numbered years).

Every Occupational Therapist (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) shall complete 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to the practice of occupational therapy during each prerenewal period as a condition of renewal. License expires on December 31st of every odd-numbered year. A prerenewal period is the 24 months preceding December 31 in the year of the renewal. 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) is equivalent to 12 units of Continued Competency Activities (CCA) (2 contact hours = 1 unit).

Indiana

PT requirements:

22 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of June 30 (in even-numbered years).

During each two (2) year license period, an Occupational Therapist (OT) or Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) must complete at least eighteen (18) hours of continuing competency of which at least nine (9) hours must be in category I courses. An occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant may not earn more than nine (9) category II credit hours towards the requirements

Iowa

PT requirements:

Occupational Therapists (OT) are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education approved by the board every 2 years. A minimum of 20 hours shall be clinical in nature. Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are required to complete 15 hours of continuing education approved by the board every 2 years. A minimum of 10 hours shall be clinical in nature.

Kansas

PT requirements:

Kentucky

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of March 31 (in odd-numbered years).

OT requirements:

A licensee applying for license renewal shall complete a minimum of twelve (12) CCUs of qualified activities for maintaining continuing competence during the preceding annual renewal period.

Louisiana

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of March 31 (in odd- or even-numbered years based on the licensee’s birth year).

Occupational Therapists (OT) Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are required to complete 12 hours or 1.2 continuing education units (CEUs) every year on or before the last day of the licensee's birth month. One CEU constitutes 10 hours of participation in an organized continuing professional education program approved by the board

Maine

PT requirements:

There are no continuing education requirements in Maine; licenses renew March 31 (in even-numbered years).

Maryland

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years (CEUs must be completed by March 31; licenses renew May 31 in odd- or even-numbered years based on the license ID number).

Maryland occupational therapist’s licenses expire every two years. Those who are licensed in even-numbered years have licenses that expire June 30 of even-numbered years. Those who are licensed in odd-numbered years have licenses that expire June 30 of odd-numbered years. Licensees must complete 24 hours of continuing competency every two years.

Massachusetts

PT requirements:

There are no continuing education requirements in Massachusetts; licenses renew on the licensee’s birthday.

Michigan

PT requirements:

24 professional development requirements (PDR) credits every two years with a renewal date of July 31 based on original licensure date (PDRs aren’t required for the first renewal).

Minnesota

PT requirements:

Occupational Therapists (OT) are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Mississippi

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years with a renewal date of June 30 (last names beginning with A-L renew in odd-numbered years; last names beginning with M-Z renew in even-numbered years).

OT requirements:

Regulations set the requirement of 20 contact hours (CH) or 2 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) to be accrued during the licensure period. No carryover of continuing education hours from one licensure period to another shall be allowed. At least 30 percent (6 Contact Hours or .6 CEU) of the required continuing education must be directly related to the clinical practice of occupational therapy. The six (6) contact hours related to clinical practice shall be live face-to-face training i.e., no internet training, video training, television training, etc. Of the remaining required 14 hours of training, 50 percent or 7 hours may be non live face-to-face training. Non live training may include home study courses, video, internet, etc. All training shall be from approved sources.

Missouri

PT requirements:

30 PT contact hours every two years (CEUs are due December 31 in odd-numbered years prior to license renewal).

The OT/OTA Licensee must have 24 hours of continuing education to renew the license 1 CCC = 1 hour. The continuing education is only to be submitted to the office upon request.

Montana

PT requirements:

Occupational Therapists (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are required to complete 10 continuing education credits by June 15 of each year when renewing their license.  For course approval, please send a letter of request to the Board with the agenda, brochure and resume of presenters.

Nebraska

OT requirements:

A minimum of 12 contact hours of continuing education is required annually. Documentation is required to renew or reinstate a license. Licenses expire June 30th, however the renewal period is April - May, annually.

New Hampshire

Occupational Therapy Assistant: 12 hours of continuing professional education annually, 6 of those hours need to be clinical application.
Occupational Therapist: 24 hours of continuing professional education biennially, 12 of those hours need to be clinical application. All Occupational Therapy licenses expire December on 31 in every odd-numbered year. Renewal notices are sent out from the office no later than October 15 of the renewal year.

New Jersey

New York

Occupational Therapists or Occupational Therapy Assistants, are required to complete 36 contact hours of approved continuing competency within each three-year renewal period. No more than 24 hours of the continuing competency requirement may be completed through self-study. These requirements will be phased in during the first three years. Therefore, OTs and OTAs are required to complete one-half hour of continuing competency for each month beginning in March 2013 through February 2016, for those registrants whose three-year renewal period falls within this time frame. Commencing with March 2016, registrants will be required to complete the full 36 hours of continuing competency.

North Carolina

OTs renew in odd years; OTAs renew in even years. Licensees shall complete at least one contact hour of ethics, jurisprudence, or cultural competence education per renewal cycle.

OT requirements:

Occupational therapists and ccupational therapy assistants must complete thirty (30) hours of continued competency every two years. Licenses expire every two years on the practitioners' birthdate; CE must be obtained during the preceding two year. A minimum of twenty (20) hours must be directly related to the practice of occupational therapy. Any remaining hours may be in professional development activities that enhance the practice of the licensed occupational therapist or licensed occupational therapy assistant. Beginning January 1, 2014, as part of their continued competency, occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are required to obtain at least three hours of training every six years in suicide assessment. These hours count towards the 30-hour continuing competency requirement.
